What is your role?

I'm part of the development team here at Lightbox; I have many different responsibilities to fulfil on a daily basis. My main responsibility is to develop functional websites that I have been given by the design team, ensuring that their vision is brought to life through the browser. Not only does the website need to look, feel and engage the audience. I need to make sure that the code is well written and performs to the highest possible standard; this means making sure that the code I write meets industry standards and follows our internal structure.

Not only do I develop websites, I also need to keep a good relationship between us and the client. This means communicating via email and phone calls on a regular basis keeping them up to date on the progress of the site, as well as answering any questions or concerns they may have.

What are the key skills needed to be effective in this particular role?

I think the key skills are: persistence and the ability to solve problems.

What is a typical working day like for you at Lightbox?

A typical working day at Lightbox starts with a round of brews for everyone! Once settled down and at my work station the first thing I do is setup and launch our internal systems, ready to setup my environment for starting or continuing a project I have been working on. Before I begin any development I check the support emails to see if any clients have emailed with questions and respond to them accordingly.

Once I have finished responding to client emails, I continue working on or begin a new project that I have been given; this can be multiple projects at once depending on how busy we are. This usually takes up most of my day and requires all my attention (besides when I'm fulfilling my other role as 'Office DJ', to keep everyone happy).

Every now and then I will look online and read any relevant articles regarding industry news and technology advances, keeping up to date with the latest going's on in the industry I work in.

What do you love about your job?

The one thing that I have always loved about my job is the constant problem solving and playing around that can be done with my line of work. I love being able to see the progress I have made over the years and seeing my work on the internet. I am always finding myself messing around and playing with code in my spare time, as well as turning a beautiful design into a working, functional website that can be interacted with and having a happy client at the end.

What is something that you don't really like?

I have never been a fan of repetitive work and sometimes I am required to insert content and images into a website that can take hours to do. Other than that there really isn’t anything I dislike!

What inspired you to want to work in this industry?

Curiosity was a major factor for me and is what inspired me to work in this industry. I didn’t fully understand what the web was capable of before joining Lightbox. I loved the idea of being able to create something from nothing and now having the ability and skills to do so make the hard work and dedication worthwhile.

What advice would you give someone who was looking to work in the same industry?

Someone wanting to work in this industry with very little or even no previous experience or knowledge, need to be patient and keep reading and develop an understanding of their language of choice. Keeping up with the new technologies is vitally important, reading articles and engaging with other developers will help you to understand the industry and progress within it.
